Christmas Quilt

It’s rare that a quilter or longarm quilter will ever make a quilt for themselves. I’m sure lots of people will find this hard to believe but it’s true. I make quilts for friends, family and for customers but I almost feel guilty working on something for myself.

Christmas 2016, I decided I wanted to have a lovely Christmassey quilt on my bed for Christmas 2017. No pressure. A full year to make it. I only recently finished it but that was good going for me as I had many other projects on the go during the year.

I normally only like modern fabrics, patterns and designs but suddenly I got an urge to make a traditional, slightly Nordic Christmas quilt.

I am a redhead and was always told I shouldn’t wear red so generally as a colour I’m not really that sure how to work with red but I decided I wanted a red quilt as red is Christmassy but also a great colour in the bedroom.

My only worry was that it might make my room look smaller but I was willing to take the chance. The pattern called for hundreds of miniature log cabin quilt blocks that had a string quilt look to it when finished. It is scrappy looking but in a very uniformed way if that makes sense.

When I first saw the fabric for this quilt, it reminded me of a quilt my mother used to have on her bed years ago when I was a child. Isn’t it funny how you can pick fabrics because they remind you of memories long since past?

The finished product turned out even better than I had hoped and I know I will treasure this quilt forever.

Now I need to get cracking on my summer quilt!
